union meeting

Going to my union meeting tonight, should be a good time. I’m a Sergeant at Arms, working the back table. The nearby parking ramp recently automated, so to validate parking we have to hand out passes AFTER they sign for it…

Cold and Flu season

Airborne

Airborne

Apparently I didn’t wash my hands enough. I caught something and have a cold. I’ve been trying both Airborne and Zicam, seeing if either (or both) helps reduce the amount of time I’m all winy and irritating. I’m also eating a lot of green grapes and napping a lot.

The enemy you know

Women make up 16 percent of the armed services and serve in all levels of leadership. We bring extraordinary value to the service of our country. But I’m quickly discovering that many women who have served do not recognize themselves as veterans.

There has long been a kind of unwritten rule, perpetuated by our male counterparts, that if you didn’t serve in combat you weren’t really a veteran, but were simply fulfilling “support” or “service” roles. Women veterans do not have the same experiences as their male counterparts. Women have to fight harder, work harder, complain less and sacrifice more just to be considered equal. We fight the same wars, have the same mission and defend the same country. We mourn the loss of our friends and suffer injuries from the enemy. Continue reading

New York Times article 16 August 2009

As the convoy rumbled up the road in Iraq, Specialist Veronica Alfaro was struck by the beauty of fireflies dancing in the night. Then she heard the unmistakable pinging of tracer rounds and, in a Baghdad moment, realized the insects were illuminated bullets.

On June 9th, 1909, 22-year-old Alice Ramsey set out on the journey of lifetime. Accompanied by three female companions, they drove from 1930 Broadway in New York City on an epic transcontinental journey. Forty-one days later, Alice, a Vassar College alumna, would become the first woman to drive across America.

In 2005, Richard Anderson, a Pacific Northwest antique car aficionado, and his 34-year old daughter Emily began preparations to rebuild a 1909 Maxwell DA. Their goal: to complete the car for June 9th, 2009 – the 100-year anniversary of Alice’s landmark drive – and drive away from 1930 Broadway with Emily at the helm. The final destination: the St. James Hotel in San Francisco, California – exactly where Alice’s 1909 trip concluded – with multiple events along the way to pay homage to women’s accomplishments during the last century. Hawaii’s new wave power

Hawaii's new wave power

On the surface, OPT's PowerBuoy resembles any ordinary ocean buoy.

Ocean Power Technologies announced Thursday that it will be installing a water-power buoy system to tie into Hawaii's Oahu Island power grid.
The New Jersey-based company makes ocean buoys that harness the energy of ocean waves to generate electricity that is then sent back to shore via underwater cable.
Through a partnership with the U.S. Navy, Ocean Power has been developing technology that could supplement electricity needs for the military in Hawaii. More…

I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

November

I'm still not working but I have applied for a job at Minnesota GreenStar, a non profit organization promoting green building standards for residential construction and existing homes. I'm looking forward to a visit from Jim and Chris this Friday, we are having dessert and they get to meet Fresca. Later this month we are hosting Thanksgiving, and Stephanie's family visits and generally we have a good time.

Stephanie's aunt Amy was in a farming accident and is still in the hospital in Rochester. Hopefully she'll be able to go home soon.

I'm studying Dreamweaver, CSS, Coda, and php again. A really good website to learn computer applications is lynda.com, and I've spent many hours there watching their tutorials.

Books I'm reading right now include the fourth book in the Thursday Next series and Cesar Millan's second book.

Carl’s website

Welcome to my website. I’ll be keeping this home page up to date with news, information, and general nonsense as I see fit. There may be lapses in my judgement, and I may tend to wander around a subject before I misinterpret it, however, you’ll never be more highly entertained than you are right now.
